Leather and ethical values
Leather
An ancestral noble material, leather is part of what is known as the fifth quarter. The 4/4 are all the "consumable" parts of sheep and cattle intended for human consumption.
The fifth quarter is therefore upclycling.
With tanning, we save materials that would otherwise have been lost, turning it into a rot-proof, incredibly hard-wearing product that has been around since the dawn of time.
Good animal care
To have beautiful leather, the animal must have had a comfortable life. Because every injury, whether accidental, maltreatment or even insect bite, comes to the fore during the tanning process.
So it's essential that animals have received the respect they deserve, and it's the leather industry that's changing the game: they're creating partnerships with livestock farms so that they implement animal welfare measures, with the aim of obtaining beautiful hides.
Vegetable tanning
Then, this Upcycled material is tanned: two types of tanning exist. Selyès has chosen 100% vegetable tanning, for belts, necklaces and even all linings.
Made from vegetable tannins (bark, root, sap, etc.), this process takes longer and costs more than mineral tanning, but is much more respectful of the environment and the user.
Indeed, vegetable-tanned leather is innocuous and hypoallergenic, unlike its mineral-tanned cousin.
Taking all this into account, it seems clear that vegetable tanning was no longer a luxury, but a necessity that Selyès makes a point of applying.
Proof of time
The final argument for choosing this type of product and leather is quite simply that it is more resistant over time and will age much better, taking on a beautiful patina.
Selyès products are made with respect for animals and the environment, and will last over time.
Packagings
Our pouches and tote bags are made from organic cotton and are oeko tex certified to comply with an ecological charter that respects the environment and the end-user.
Our shipping cartons are made from 80% recycled cardboard and are 100% recyclable, including kraft tape.
Our interior trim is upcycled and/or recyclable.
